How to prepare your car for colder weather

It’s officially fall, which means it’s time for football, color-changing leaves, Halloween fun, and falling temperatures. With an agenda full of autumn activities, is your vehicle ready to take on the cooler weather? We’ve put together three vital tips for safe trips this fall!

TIP #1: Check Your Tread

Checking your tire tread is one of the most essential and most straightforward things to do to help ensure your safety during the colder weather. It’s as easy as digging for a penny from the nooks of your seats. No – but really! You can do the penny test to test your tread. All you have to do is place the penny into several different grooves in one of your tires, with Honest Abe’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread depth is worn down to a dangerous point. You may consider getting a tire replacement before winter comes around.

TIP #2: Check Your Tire Pressure

To check your pressure, you will need a tire gauge tool. You should always reference the tire pressure noted on your door jamb, not on the tire itself. Please ensure that you do not go over or under the psi, as both underinflated and overinflated tires can be dangerous and lead to premature tire wear. You can also go back to your owner’s manual for further instruction.

TIP #3: Test Your Battery

Indeed, cold weather isn’t as damaging to your battery as hot weather. After a long hot summer, the battery is more susceptible to corrosion on its terminals and connections, which will cause the battery to drain quickly in the fall and/or winter. Our expert technicians can determine the health of your battery in as little as one minute. We invite you to come by our shop for a battery test today!

If you need assistance in checking any of the items mentioned above, please do not hesitate to reach out to our skillful technicians at John’s Auto Care.
